A man who has been waiting for a kidney transplant from the NHS for 22 years remains hopeful that a donor will come forward to change his life. Amjad Rabbani, 57, has been on regular dialysis since his teenage years due to kidney failure caused by a rare condition. Despite being on the transplant list since 2003, he continues to wait for a suitable donor to become available.

The NHS transplant waiting list is currently at a record high following a decrease in donors post-pandemic. Amjad relies on his faith in Islam, believing that his fate is in the hands of God. His journey with kidney issues began in his teenage years when he experienced kidney failure due to a condition where urine flows backward into the kidneys.

After undergoing dialysis and a successful transplant that lasted 16 years, Amjad faced challenges when the transplanted kidney failed due to immunosuppressant medication. He has since spent over 15,000 hours on dialysis, impacting his daily life significantly. Despite the difficulties, Amjad remains positive and hopeful for a suitable match.

The need for more organ donors is crucial, especially among Black and Asian communities where there is a shortage of ethnically matched organs. The NHS Blood and Transplant emphasizes the importance of registering as an organ donor to save lives. With over 8,000 people waiting for transplants in the UK, the demand for organs continues to rise.

Amjad’s story highlights the life-changing impact of organ donation and the challenges faced by those awaiting transplants. Dialysis is a necessary but restrictive treatment, underscoring the urgency for more donors to come forward. With advancements like the Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Act, efforts are being made to increase organ donation rates and save lives.

Despite the uncertainties and restrictions of dialysis, Amjad remains positive and hopeful for a successful transplant that will allow him the freedom to enjoy everyday activities. His story sheds light on the importance of organ donation and the life-changing impact it can have on individuals awaiting transplants.
