The oldest existing piece of artwork by Banksy could soon be available for art enthusiasts, as the building it embellishes in Bristol is set to be put up for sale. Wellspring Settlement, the property owner and a crucial community hub, is facing ongoing financial difficulties and is preparing to sell the premises. This building once housed the ‘Dug Out’ youth club, a spot frequented by the enigmatic artist during his early years.

Wellspring Settlement plays a vital role in the Barton Hill neighborhood, offering a range of services such as baby and toddler play sessions, a food club, financial guidance, and social gatherings for adults. Additionally, they support youth programs and provide space for various local charities and organizations.

The community center played a significant role in nurturing a young Banksy before he rose to fame as the world’s most renowned anonymous artist. Therefore, any prospective buyer will not only be ending its legacy of providing a space for Bristol’s youth but also acquiring a piece of art history. Presently, the sizeable Barton Hill building is home to the local amateur boxing club, which will need to find a new location once the property changes ownership.

In a sincere message to the Barton Hill residents, Wellspring shared their challenging situation. They expressed that despite the boxing club’s positive impact on the community, the expenses of maintaining the building surpass the club’s rent payments. Consequently, they are exploring a sale to secure the organization’s financial future and are committed to assisting the boxing club in finding suitable alternative premises.

Although the community has a strong emotional connection to the building, Wellspring assures transparency and aims to ensure a bright future for both the charity and the boxing club. For more information, individuals can contact info@wsb.org.uk.
