Millions of Gmail users are set to have the option to change their email address to a new one. Google previously hinted at this update, and now it seems to be rolling out globally. Google’s recent update on the Gmail blog confirms that users can switch their Google Account email from an address ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same ending.
This change could be well-received, especially by those who want to update their username or have had changes in their circumstances. However, Google notes that this feature is gradually being made available to all users, so it may not be accessible to everyone just yet.
The new system will allow both the old and new email addresses to coexist, ensuring that any emails sent to the current Gmail address will be forwarded to the new one automatically. Google assures users that all account data, including photos, messages, and emails associated with the original address, will remain intact.
To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing any emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if required.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Click on Change Google Account email under “Google Account email.”
– If the option is not available, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new username you wish to use, ensuring it is not in current use or previously used and deleted.
– Click on Change email and confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Once done, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will be retained as an alternate email.
