Lorenzo Musetti has had an intense week but managed to secure a coveted spot at the ATP Finals. The 23-year-old was on the verge of qualifying for the tournament for the first time, but a loss at the Paris Masters allowed Felix Auger-Aliassime to move ahead in the Race to Turin.
In a bid to secure his place, Musetti competed at the ATP 250 event in Athens, knowing that winning the tournament was crucial for his ATP Finals qualification. Despite falling to Novak Djokovic in the final, Musetti’s spot was confirmed after Djokovic withdrew from the year-end Finals, granting Musetti the opportunity.
Following his qualification, Musetti expressed his joy on social media, calling it a “dream come true.” Despite aiming for his third career title at the Hellenic Championship, Musetti faced another defeat but was pleased to have secured his spot at the ATP Finals.
After the match with Djokovic, Musetti revealed that Djokovic informed him of his withdrawal decision on the court. Musetti has now arrived in Turin for the ATP Finals and supported Djokovic’s choice to delay the announcement until the last moment.
With Djokovic’s withdrawal, the ATP had to swiftly find a replacement alternate. Casper Ruud stepped in as the second alternate after Alexander Bublik moved up to first alternate. Both players will receive appearance fees, with the potential to earn more if they are called upon to play.
