British tennis player Dan Evans expressed his frustration and hinted at quitting the Great Britain Davis Cup team in 2022 due to feeling insulted by being left out of the doubles matches despite his success in the 2015 Davis Cup. He emphasized that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not affect his selection for the team event.

In an interview with the i newspaper, Evans conveyed his disappointment and stated that his exclusion from the doubles matches in the 2021 Davis Cup Finals was perplexing and insulting to him. He believed that the focus should be on game style rather than doubles rankings when selecting players for the Davis Cup ties.

Despite his concerns, Evans eventually got the chance to showcase his doubles prowess alongside Neal Skupski in a victorious match against Colombia the following year. However, he was sidelined from the 2023 Davis Cup Finals due to an injury.

In the ongoing 2025 Davis Cup Finals, Britain is absent after a defeat to Japan in the initial qualifying round. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, secured a spot in the semi-finals by defeating Austria. Berrettini and Cobolli’s strong performances propelled Italy to the next stage against Belgium.

Former Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini set the tone for Italy’s success with a win over Jurij Rodionov, while Cobolli sealed their advancement by defeating Filip Misolic. Italy’s victory showcased their depth despite missing key players like Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.
