A man tragically passed away after an assault at a pub, leading to his family expressing deep sorrow while authorities apprehended a suspect for murder. Tony Powles, aged 62, was involved in the incident at the Red Lion in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, on October 9 and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Wednesday. The altercation, occurring at the pub on Batley Road, resulted in the arrest of Harry Mannion, 27, on suspicion of murder.
In a heartfelt tribute, Powles’ family described him as cherished by all who knew him. West Yorkshire Police released a statement quoting his family saying, “Tony was a beloved Partner, Dad, Grandad, Father-in-Law, Brother, Uncle, and friend. He was known as ‘Dad’ by many, respected by most, and loved by all who crossed paths with him.”
The family’s message continued, “Our hearts ache knowing you are no longer with us to witness our achievements, share our memories, and cherish unforgettable moments. It is devastating that you have departed when you had so much to offer and live for. We weep for our loss while longing for one more embrace, one more ‘see you tomorrow,’ or one more ‘I love you.’
“You will always hold a special place in our hearts, and your absence leaves a significant void in our lives. We won’t bid farewell, but rather ‘see you later’ – until we reunite. We kindly request privacy during this challenging period.”
Mannion, a resident of Wakefield, initially faced charges of GBH but was later re-arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody. The police statement stated, “A man who sustained severe injuries in an assault at a Wakefield pub has passed away. Tony Powles, 62, passed away in the hospital yesterday (October 22). This incident occurred following a confrontation at the Red Lion Pub on Batley Road on Thursday, October 9, resulting in Mr. Powles’ grave injuries.”
Detective Chief Inspector Dan Bates of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team remarked, “Our thoughts are with Tony’s family during this challenging time. We have initiated a murder inquiry and have detained Mannion once again on suspicion of murder. We are actively pursuing leads related to this incident.”
