An easyJet traveler shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised when easyJet charged her €58 (£51) upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete, claiming her suitcase was too large despite her prior measurements. After reaching out to the bag manufacturer, easyJet refunded the fee.

Ms. Machin, a 59-year-old from Crystal Palace, London, is not the only passenger facing unjust oversize cabin bag fines. Consumer group Which? highlights issues with official bag sizers at certain airports, leading to confusion among travelers.

Passengers flying with budget airlines have learned to double-check bag dimensions allowed onboard. However, discrepancies with airport bag sizers can cause misunderstandings. Ms. Machin, a freelance film and TV sales director, encountered the issue on her way back from Crete earlier this year.

Despite confirming her compliance with easyJet’s size limits, Ms. Machin faced resistance from ground staff at Chania Airport. The staff’s refusal to acknowledge her bag’s size led her to pay the fine to board her return flight.

Upon contacting the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max, Ms. Machin received validation that her bag met easyJet’s requirements. Which? notes previous instances where airlines penalized customers due to flawed bag sizers, emphasizing the importance of appealing unjust fines.

Despite claiming no issues with Chania Airport’s sizers, easyJet refunded Ms. Machin and apologized for her experience. The airline assures standard bag sizer dimensions across all airports and vows to address customer feedback on a case-by-case basis.
