Nadine Dorries, who recently left the Conservative Party to join Reform UK, faced tough questioning on immigration during her appearance on BBC’s Question Time. The audience openly chuckled as Ms. Dorries struggled to respond to Labour MP Stephen Kinnock’s inquiries about her party’s immigration strategies. Despite her initial remarks about Reform UK, the camera captured the audience’s surprised reactions.

When pressed by Mr. Kinnock on the impact of leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) on international cooperation, the former culture secretary faltered in providing a coherent answer. Ms. Dorries, who switched parties in September, stumbled over her words, indicating uncertainty about border control measures. Despite her attempt to redirect the discussion by emphasizing the cost of asylum hotels, the audience in Swindon couldn’t help but chuckle at her responses.

Earlier in the debate, Ms. Dorries had criticized the ECHR, claiming that only if Reform UK came to power would immigration issues be addressed. Asserting that Reform UK is the only party with a plan to halt illegal immigration, Ms. Dorries, now a newspaper columnist, confidently stated that people would take her party seriously once in government. However, Mr. Kinnock challenged her on Reform UK’s actual proposals.

The topic of immigration remained contentious, as demonstrated by recent events in the UK and Ireland where protests turned violent following allegations of a crime involving an asylum seeker. This discussion on Question Time prompted journalist Mariella Frostrup to express her concern over the lack of compassion in the UK’s treatment of migrants, garnering applause from the studio audience.
