The Powerlist 2026 has recently unveiled the most influential Black individuals in the UK, recognizing those of African, African Caribbean, and African American descent who wield substantial influence in the country.
Leading the pack is Afua Kyei, the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director at the Bank of England. Kyei, a prominent figure in UK finance, is responsible for managing the financial governance of the £1 trillion balance sheet, spearheading funding reforms, and overseeing critical national infrastructure upgrades for Payments. Additionally, she is a strong advocate for diversity and climate disclosure.
Expressing her gratitude, Kyei stated, “Being ranked first on the Powerlist in its 20th year is a tremendous honor. It’s not just a personal achievement for me; it represents representation, visibility, and the potential for others. Seeing oneself reflected in unexpected spaces can alter perceptions of what is attainable. I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their aspirations and believe they can reach the pinnacle of success.”
The Powerlist also features Ian Wright, a former England and Arsenal footballer who has transitioned into a respected pundit and champion for equity in sports. Joining them in the top 10 are influential personalities like Dame Pat McGrath, a renowned makeup artist and founder of the billion-pound brand, Pat McGrath Labs. Noteworthy additions include entrepreneur Steven Bartlett, known for his role on Dragon’s Den, as well as actor and philanthropist Idris Elba OBE, among others.
This year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Powerlist, celebrating leaders and trailblazers who have shattered barriers, redefined success, and motivated future generations. The honorees will be feted at the Powerlist 2026 and Celebration of Black Excellence Awards at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London, hosted by Jeanette Kwakye MBE and Tim Campbell MBE.
Reflecting on the milestone, Michael Eboda, CEO of Powerful Media Ltd, remarked, “The inception of the Powerlist in 2006 aimed to spotlight role models whose accomplishments could inspire others. The impact over the past two decades has surpassed our expectations, offering visibility, altering perceptions, and most importantly, demonstrating to young Black individuals that their potential knows no bounds. Having Afua Kyei top the list on this 20th anniversary is particularly poignant, embodying the leadership, resilience, and vision that the Powerlist was created to honor.”
