A former contestant from the popular TV show “Great British Bake Off” revealed a different side of judge Paul Hollywood off-camera. Briony May Williams, who finished fourth in the 2018 season, experienced a challenging moment during Cake Week when her showstopper went awry in every aspect.

Williams faced a setback when her seven veils cake ended up being labeled a disaster due to an overcooked mirror glaze and uncooked pastry. Despite her usual confidence in pastry-making, she encountered unexpected difficulties that day.

Although initially upset and in tears over the mishap, Williams found solace in Hollywood’s off-camera response, which shifted her tears to laughter. She recounted a comforting moment when Hollywood, instead of his signature handshake, offered her a supportive hug and lightened the mood with a humorous remark about the situation.

Reflecting on the judge’s demeanor behind the scenes, Williams noted that Hollywood maintains a professional distance from contestants, which she believes is essential for preserving the dynamics of their interactions. She praised his balanced approach, appreciating his friendly yet slightly reserved manner.

In the current season of the show, a new group of bakers has entered the tent aiming for the 2025 title. Recently, Lesley became the seventh contestant to leave after struggling to impress the judges during the show’s meringue-themed week.

During an interview on BBC Radio Kent, Lesley shared her standout experience of meeting Paul despite his disappointment in her meringue creation. She described him as a kind individual who made the right decision in her case.

Discussing her thoughts on the ongoing season, Williams expressed admiration for the contestants, particularly highlighting Jasmine and Toby’s performances. She emphasized her long-standing love for the show and its unique challenges, such as the recent meringue week.

Empathizing with the current bakers, Williams revealed that she still feels nervous when the show’s signature music plays, recalling the intense emotional rollercoaster of being critiqued in the baking tent.

The Great British Bake Off airs tonight at 8 pm on Channel 4. Williams’ book, “The Retro Recipe Society,” is now available online through various platforms.
