Renowned former star of the Great British Bake Off, Dame Mary Berry, recently shared an amusing anecdote about her 90th birthday celebration where she had to contain her surprise when Prince William unexpectedly joined the festivities.
The esteemed culinary icon, Dame Mary, who is revered as a national treasure in Britain, was surrounded by a gathering of celebrities and members of the royal family to mark her special milestone.
Turning 90 in March this year, Dame Mary was featured on The One Show, where she was taken aback by the unexpected appearance of Prince William, the future king, offering his heartfelt congratulations.
In an interview with Saga magazine, Dame Mary candidly shared her initial reaction upon seeing His Royal Highness Prince William on screen, stating, “I had to bite my lip, because you feel, ‘Oh my goodness gracious me!’ I was completely overwhelmed. I thought, ‘I must pull myself together’.”
Reflecting on her interactions with Prince Charles, Dame Mary disclosed his competitive nature, mentioning, “I mean, to see Prince William on the screen saying that I had taught him all he knew about cooking… well! I’ve done quite a few things with him and gosh, he’s competitive. So is Catherine.”
During the special feature dedicated to Dame Mary on the BBC program, Prince William conveyed his birthday wishes, saying, “Hi Mary, I want to wish you a very happy 90th birthday, you’re a true national treasure and we’ve loved working with you over the years. Have a fantastic day today, I dread to think who’s cooking your cake and the criticisms they might get, but good luck and I hope it goes really well.”
Dame Mary’s illustrious career commenced in her twenties when she pursued culinary studies at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu school in Paris, France.
Her television debut came in 1975 at the age of 40, appearing on Afternoon Plus alongside Judith Chalmers.
Having authored several successful cookery books, some of which became bestsellers upon release, Dame Mary also ventured into memoir writing in 2013.
While her TV appearances have been numerous, Dame Mary is most recognized for her role on the Great British Bake Off, where she co-hosted with fellow judge Paul Hollywood from 2010 until her departure in 2016.
Recently, the husband of the TV personality was hospitalized due to sustaining broken ribs from a fall.
Married for nearly six decades, Dame Mary spoke about her husband’s condition, stating, “He’s just had a tumble with broken ribs. I’m very sympathetic about that. But he’s getting better day by day. Soon we’ll have him back to his own old self.”
