A father left his three-month-old daughter unattended in a baby swing, resulting in her suffocation and tragic death while he traveled over 200 miles away for a shocking reason. Jacob Vera, 26, was responsible for caring for his two children while their mother, Jessica Brown, was at work. Instead of watching over them, Vera abandoned the children, leaving the eldest, a 16-month-old, crying in a mobile crib and the baby, Isabella, swaddled and rocking in a swing upon Brown’s return.

Upon checking on her daughter, Ms. Brown noticed that Isabella was motionless and not breathing. She sought help, but Vera had left with the only phone, delaying assistance. Authorities from the Muncie Police Department in Indiana responded to the incident at the Bestway Inn around 8:30 pm on March 25, 2023, after Brown had entrusted Vera with the children earlier in the day.

Vera confessed to leaving the children unattended so he could travel to Illinois to avoid conflicts with Brown. Medical responders discovered signs of rigor mortis in Isabella, indicating she had passed away approximately two hours before they arrived. A coroner later confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation.

Described as a joyful and loving infant, Isabella’s untimely passing deeply affected her family and community. Vera admitted his negligence in a court appearance and faces sentencing for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily harm, with a potential nine-year prison term looming.
