Pressure is increasing for Prince Andrew to appear before Members of Parliament (MPs). There are growing demands for the disgraced royal to provide testimony to a select committee regarding the use of taxpayer funds. The 65-year-old is said to be considering leaving his 30-room Royal Lodge residence voluntarily due to controversy surrounding the nominal rent he currently pays for the property in Windsor.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has urged the Public Accounts Committee to conduct an investigation into whether public money has been used to support Andrew’s living arrangements. He emphasized that as Prince Andrew has tarnished his position, he should not receive special treatment at the expense of taxpayers, with Parliament being responsible for safeguarding their interests.

Sir Ed proposed that a select committee inquiry be held to examine the management of support by the Crown Estate, with both Crown Estate officials and Prince Andrew expected to provide testimony for transparency on the matter. He communicated his recommendations to the chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, who intends to seek further details on the lease agreements for Royal Lodge from the Crown Estate and the government.

Select committees, bipartisan groups that gather evidence and present their conclusions to Parliament, play a crucial role in scrutinizing governmental actions. Sir Ed suggested that if the committee inquiry does not proceed, the government should allocate time for a debate on the issue. He highlighted the importance of ensuring accountability and transparency, emphasizing the need to protect the royal family from being embroiled in difficult situations.

The ongoing focus on Prince Andrew has overshadowed other royal activities, including poignant moments such as the monarch’s prayer alongside the Pope. Following revelations about his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew withdrew from active royal duties.

Calls for Andrew to give testimony about his knowledge of the situation have surfaced in the United States, although he vehemently denies any wrongdoing. Discussions between Andrew and aides to the King are ongoing, but Andrew is reportedly hesitant to relinquish his residence of over two decades, citing concerns over the location of a new home and compensation for lodge renovations.

During negotiations with the Palace, Andrew has expressed interest in residing at Frogmore Cottage, the former residence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, who currently resides with Andrew, is eyeing a move to nearby Adelaide Cottage once William and Kate vacate the premises.

When questioned about providing for the Prince’s ex-wife, Sir Ed refrained from making a definitive statement, suggesting that such decisions should be made by others.
