John F. Kennedy’s lone grandson has officially announced his bid for a seat in Congress, indicating his commitment to upholding his family’s political legacy. Jack Schlossberg, aged 32 and the offspring of Caroline Kennedy, disclosed his intention to run for the position currently held by long-time Democrat Jerrold Nadler in New York City’s 12th district.

Nadler, aged 78 and with a tenure of 34 years, will be stepping down from his role. Schlossberg, known for his significant social media presence with over 1.7 million followers on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where he often criticizes Donald Trump and conservative politics, expressed his strategy to engage with younger voters in an increasingly challenging media environment during an interview with The New York Times.

A Harvard-educated Yale alumnus, Schlossberg, who has experience working in Congress and the State Department, emphasized his pride in continuing the Kennedy family tradition of public service. He cited inspiration from President Kennedy and his uncle Ted Kennedy, who had a lengthy Senate career, shaping his own values.

Despite occasional controversial interactions, including public disputes with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Schlossberg defends his online presence as a means to raise political awareness among disengaged voters. His mother, Caroline Kennedy, commended his boldness in pursuing political involvement, even amidst criticism.

Positioning himself as a non-establishment Democrat influenced by grassroots successes like Zohran Mamdani, the new mayor of New York, Schlossberg advocates for the Democratic Party to reconnect with its core identity and values. He aims to counter what he views as fear-driven politics of the recent past, particularly during the Trump administration.

The upcoming competition for Nadler’s seat is anticipated to be competitive, with several established political figures already in the running. However, the Kennedy name remains a powerful symbol of American liberalism, evoking nostalgia and a sense of historical significance for many voters.

Schlossberg aspires to reignite the spirit of challenging the status quo within the Democratic Party, emphasizing a return to its foundational principles. “We lost touch with that — and I want to bring it back,” he stated.
