Millions of households in the UK are set to benefit from a £150 reduction on their energy bills through the Warm Home Discount scheme. This discount is typically applied directly to the energy bill by the supplier rather than being given as a cash payment.

For households using pre-payment meters, the discount may come in the form of a voucher, depending on the supplier, which can then be used to top up the meter. Eligible households will receive confirmation letters from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) starting this week.

Approximately six million households are expected to receive the discount, including an additional 2.7 million due to the recent expansion of the scheme. Previously, eligibility was limited to those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, leaving out some pensioners.

However, the government has announced the removal of this threshold if a recipient of a means-tested benefit is listed on the energy bill. This change will allow individuals below the State Pension age to receive the Winter Payment this year if they meet the criteria.

Pension Credit recipients will automatically receive the discount, while other eligible individuals may need to apply through their energy supplier. To qualify, the supplier must participate in the scheme, and either the claimant or their partner must be receiving specific means-tested benefits or tax credits, with their name on the electricity bill by August 24, 2025.

According to DWP guidelines, certain benefits make individuals eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. Participating energy firms in the Warm Home Discount scheme can be found on the GOV.UK website.
