Double Cold Weather Payments have been distributed to certain households this week in response to snowfall in various regions of the UK.
Cold Weather Payments, valued at £25 each, are granted when the average temperature in a specific area drops to zero degrees or lower for seven consecutive days. In cases of prolonged freezing conditions, multiple payments may be received.
Currently, 18 postcode regions have qualified for two Cold Weather Payments, totaling £50, as they met the criteria on two separate occasions – on December 30 and January 6.
To be eligible for Cold Weather Payments, individuals must receive specific benefits or mortgage support. Payments are typically deposited directly into the recipient’s bank account within 14 working days. However, separate applications are required for households with infants or children under five moving in.
Administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Cold Weather Payments scheme is scheduled to continue until March 31, 2026.
In Scotland, Cold Weather Payments have been substituted with the Winter Heating Payment, valued at £59.75.
