EE mobile users are being warned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have noted that some EE customers are receiving urgent messages threatening the loss of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.

The scam involves cybercriminals impersonating the popular EE network to trick users into clicking on malicious links that lead to fake websites. These fake sites are designed to steal login information for fraudulent purposes.

The success of this scam relies on creating a sense of urgency to prompt users to act without thinking. Bitdefender explained that scammers employ a tactic of setting tight deadlines to create a feeling of imminent loss, leading users to click on fraudulent links disguised as official EE notifications.

Real EE alerts are only generated within users’ official EE accounts, not through unsolicited texts. Users are advised to treat any message with a countdown or urging immediate action as suspicious. If in doubt, texts should be forwarded to 7726 and then deleted.

This type of scam has targeted EE customers in the past, with users reporting receiving convincing fake messages earlier this year. One user shared their experience of following a link to what appeared to be a genuine EE website, cautioning others to remain vigilant. Another user admitted falling victim to the scam by entering personal information before realizing the message was fraudulent.

EE has clarified that it does not operate a points program and has provided examples of scam messages circulating, urging users to redeem supposed rewards within a short timeframe.

EE’s latest advice includes avoiding clicking on unknown links in text messages, refraining from replying to suspicious messages, not calling the sender’s number, and never sharing personal or financial details.

EE users are advised to remain cautious and vigilant to protect themselves from falling victim to such scams.
