Nicholas Maduro, the former bus driver who ascended to power as Venezuela’s de facto ruler, is now facing widespread approval for his removal.

However, the method by which Donald Trump ousted him has once again raised concerns about global order. The recent actions against Venezuela exemplify the expansionist tendencies of the US President. Trump’s ambitions extend to acquiring Greenland and reclaiming the Panama Canal, demonstrating a clear intent for regime change in Venezuela. The US intervention lacks international legitimacy and is deemed illegal under formal terms.

Critics argue that Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chavez and oversaw a shift towards a more dictatorial regime in Venezuela, lacked legitimacy. The country, once prosperous and vibrant, has now plunged into economic turmoil, losing its former status as a South American powerhouse. Despite Maduro’s questionable democratic mandate, the mere presence of opposition victory in the 2024 presidential elections does not universally justify regime change. The US’s strategic interests in Venezuela, particularly concerning oil reserves and the presence of companies like Chevron, have influenced its military involvement and decision-making.

The motives behind the US intervention in Venezuela do not solely revolve around narcotics. The successful outcome, albeit with details yet to be fully disclosed, serves as a tactical win for Trump. Traditional allies of Venezuela, such as Russia, China, and Iran, find themselves on the losing end of this outcome.

The UK, distancing itself from the Venezuelan strike, faces a dilemma regarding the legality of the operation. PM Keir Starmer and European leaders express unease over the questionable methods employed. While Maduro’s exit may benefit Venezuela internally, the orchestrated manner of his removal casts a shadow over global order. The US’s strategic realignments and assertive actions challenge the established world order, leading some to view it as a disruptive force rather than a leader of liberal democracies.
