A child was swiftly taken to the hospital following an incident where part of the school’s ceiling collapsed on him. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene on Monday, November 10, when the ceiling gave way. Another child was also hospitalized due to injuries from the collapse but both were discharged on the same day.
The incident occurred at George Washington Elementary School in Hanford, California. James Harrah, an 8-year-old student, was waiting to be picked up when a section of the ceiling stucco in the school’s outdoor amphitheater suddenly fell on him. Recounting the event, James mentioned, “All I remember is when I was going out from school, the roof fell on me.” He sustained injuries resulting in a sling on his arm and bruising.
His mother, Diana Harrah, clarified that the collapse happened as her son was walking past the amphitheater. She described the sound of the falling debris and expressed her immediate fear upon hearing about the incident.
The Harrah family expressed their terror over the event. James’s father, Shawn, rushed to the scene to check on his son and reassure him. In the aftermath, the school district announced the suspension of in-person classes until at least December 1, transitioning to remote learning for the students.
District officials stated that the campus closure was necessary for safety and that they appreciated the rapid response of the school staff and emergency services. They anticipated the return of students to campus at the beginning of December.
Looking ahead, James is eager to reunite with his friends once classes resume in person. He humorously mentioned, “I think they might be impressed because a roof fell on me.”
