Millions of Gmail users are receiving a significant update from Google. The tech giant has announced the rollout of a new feature allowing users to change their email addresses, which is especially beneficial for those wanting to switch from their original Gmail account names.
Google stated, “Your digital identity has been enhanced,” emphasizing that users can now modify their Google Account usernames (the part before @gmail.com) used for accessing various services such as Gmail, Photos, and Drive.
A key advantage of this update is that the original email address will remain functional alongside the new one, ensuring that messages sent to either account will not be missed.
Google reassured users that their account data, including photos, messages, and emails, will remain intact. This update, however, is currently only available in the US, leaving UK users out of the loop for now.
For users in the US, Google advised accessing account settings, navigating to personal info, selecting email, then Google account email, and finally choosing the change Google account email option to pick a new and unique username. The original email address will be retained as an alternate address, with the limitation of creating only one new address every 12 months.
Users in the US are encouraged to review their settings to see if the update has been applied to their accounts.
