A man described as “cowardly” has been released from court following his conviction for a brutal assault on his former girlfriend, during which he forcefully inserted his thumbs into her eyes.

Twenty-year-old Layton Bowman, residing in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, attacked his ex-girlfriend by strangling her, brandishing a knife, and spitting at a police officer upon his arrest the next day. Additionally, he was found in possession of cannabis and caused damage to his police cell by urinating inside it.

Bowman was sentenced to nine months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday but was immediately released due to his time served on remand. He admitted guilt to several charges including assault, strangulation, weapon threats, drug possession, and criminal damage.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Bowman aggressively confronted his ex-girlfriend at her residence after she ended their relationship. He verbally abused her and physically assaulted her by poking his thumbs into her eyes, demonstrating aggressive behavior.

The prosecutor detailed how Bowman exhibited violent behavior on multiple occasions, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges. While in custody, he caused further trouble by vandalizing his cell with urine.

In his defense, Bowman’s lawyer mentioned that his client has shown signs of maturing and expressed a desire to seek employment soon. Despite the distress caused to the victim, she did not sustain any visible injuries from the ordeal.

The presiding judge warned Bowman about his unacceptable behavior towards his ex-girlfriend, emphasizing the need for reform to avoid a prolonged incarceration. Due to time served, the judge had to release Bowman, albeit expressing a wish for a more extended prison sentence given the severity of the crimes committed.
