A man who survived a bear attack has shared his harrowing experience of the moment before the bear crushed his skull and left him unconscious.

Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death when a large brown bear dragged him into bushes and repeatedly bit his head, cracking his skull but miraculously avoiding penetrating his brain.

Although blinded in the attack, Dan vividly recounted the terrifying sound he heard just before he feared his life was ending.

Recounting the incident, Dan, who had been in Alaska for years, explained that he and his friend Jana encountered the bear while walking through the forest after a day of fishing.

Coastal Alaska is home to massive brown bears, known to reach heights over 9 feet and weighing up to 1,500 pounds, with impressive speed capabilities.

Despite his past encounters with bears, Dan sensed the bear’s unusual aggression and agitation, prompting a slow retreat that unfortunately led to a sudden attack as the bear protected her cubs hidden in nearby bushes.

Dan remembered the chilling moment of realizing he was the one making a pitiful cry as the bear sank its teeth into his head, causing him to lose consciousness multiple times during the ordeal.

After the bear left, thinking Dan was dead, Jana and local fishermen cared for him until emergency services arrived, rushing him to the hospital where Dan underwent life-saving surgery after sustaining severe injuries.

Following a medically-induced coma and a lengthy recovery process, Dan, a former recreational therapist for children, shared how the traumatic incident haunted him but also led to personal growth and resilience.

Now residing in Anchorage, Alaska, with his family, Dan co-authored a book in 2013 titled “Beyond the Bear: How I Learned to Live and Love Again after Being Blinded by a Bear,” reflecting on his journey of overcoming the trauma and living a fulfilling life beyond the attack.
