Britain’s billionaires have experienced a significant increase in their wealth over the past year, contrasting with the struggles faced by many ordinary individuals to make ends meet, according to recent research. While a large portion of families continues to grapple with the burdensome cost of living, the fortunes of the wealthiest individuals have surged by an additional £11 billion, equating to over £30 million per day, as outlined in a report by Oxfam. The charity’s calculations indicate that 56 billionaires now possess a combined wealth equal to that of 27 million other Britons.

This trend of escalating wealth is not limited to the UK alone. Oxfam’s study reveals that the collective net worth of the world’s billionaires has reached a record £13.6 trillion, following an additional near £1.9 trillion surge in the preceding year. The global elite are also gaining greater political influence and media control, impacting civil rights and legal systems worldwide. Meanwhile, nearly half of the global population remains ensnared in poverty, with one in four individuals lacking the means to afford regular meals.

Oxfam released its report coinciding with the commencement of the Davos economic forum, where influential figures from the business and political realms convene in the luxurious Swiss ski resort for their annual meeting. Last year, a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation indicated that over one in five individuals in the UK lived in poverty, totaling 14.3 million people in 2022/23. Despite this, Oxfam’s findings suggest that the average UK billionaire has seen their wealth surge by an average of £231 million in the past year, surpassing the annual earnings of an average worker in less time than it takes to watch a football match.

Aside from exacerbating income inequality, the report suggests that the concentration of wealth among a few individuals is undermining democracies globally. It points to a 16% rise in the wealth of the world’s billionaires since the previous year, coinciding with what it describes as US President Donald Trump’s “pro-billionaire agenda.” Oxfam warns that the dominance of billionaires extends to major media and social media companies, such as Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta and Elon Musk’s X, with eight of the top 10 artificial intelligence companies worldwide being led by billionaires.

Max Lawson, Oxfam’s head of inequality policy, attributes the surge in super-rich wealth to stock market and corporate profit boosts, influenced in part by policies of the Trump administration favoring deregulation and monopoly consolidation. Sonya Sultan, the charity’s chief influencing officer for the UK, underscores the growing global discontent against a system skewed in favor of billionaires, with protests erupting worldwide demanding systemic changes. Sultan emphasizes the need to heed these voices and take action, noting a rising public support for wealth taxes in the UK.

The article also lists the top 10 wealthiest individuals in Britain, underscoring the immense fortunes amassed by hedge fund managers, entrepreneurs, and industry magnates across various sectors.
