A recently born baby girl, still connected by her umbilical cord, was discovered abandoned on the stairs of a bustling train station during the Monday morning rush hour. The infant was found at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the entrance to the southbound 1, 2, and 3 subway lines at 34th Street–Penn Station in New York City.
Upon finding the baby, a passerby promptly contacted emergency services, leading to a rapid arrival of medical assistance. The baby, who was conscious and alert, was swiftly taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition by authorities.
Law enforcement officials are currently examining surveillance footage in the vicinity to identify the individual responsible for abandoning the child. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Commenting on the situation, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow referred to it as the ‘Miracle on 34th Street,’ noting the prompt discovery of the unattended infant at the station. This incident follows a recent case where a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a cardboard box alongside a road, discovered by a passerby on Wednesday, September 24, at 6:50 a.m.
Reportedly, the newborn, estimated to be just a few hours old, was promptly taken to a hospital where doctors confirmed her good health. The baby, believed to be less than a day old as her umbilical cord had already been severed, was found in Tuguegarao City, Philippines, as indicated by a statement from the Philippine National Police (PNP).
A social worker from the City Social Welfare and Development Office mentioned that the baby is currently stable and will be under observation at the hospital for up to five days to ensure her ongoing well-being. Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the swift actions of local residents and authorities in response to the situation.
In an official statement, he emphasized the importance of valuing every life and expressed the PNP’s commitment to identifying the individual responsible for abandoning the child.
