The remains of a father who fell off a ferry on Father’s Day have been recovered after more than four months. Mark Federspiel, 64, went overboard on June 15 while on a journey from Gourock to Dunoon in Scotland with his wife, Annette, and daughter, Lara.
Annette sounded the alarm when Mark, a former US Navy diver, failed to return from the bathroom. Despite an extensive search involving multiple agencies and units, Mark was not found, causing distress to his family.
Tragically, a body believed to be Mark’s was found at Kilcreggan Beach on October 12. Authorities confirmed the identity of the body, ruling out any suspicious circumstances in the case.
Mark, known as “Mark the Shark” during his Navy career, had been battling a rare form of leukemia, which affected his balance. Annette expressed her grief and uncertainty during the search efforts, hoping for closure.
The couple had recently returned to Dunoon for retirement after living in the US for years. Annette paid tribute to her late husband on social media, describing him as a kind and talented hero, expressing love and longing.
The family’s heartbreaking ordeal has now come to a somber end with the discovery of Mark’s body, bringing closure to his loved ones.
