Former Newsnight host Emily Maitlis has expressed satisfaction that the Metropolitan Police are investigating allegations that Prince Andrew attempted to solicit information from officers to tarnish his sexual assault accuser’s reputation.
Maitlis, who hosts the News Agents podcast, believes that Prince Andrew’s downfall was inevitable after her widely publicized 2019 interview with him on her BBC show. The interview, which was dramatized in an Amazon series called A Very Royal Scandal, depicted Andrew posing uncomfortable questions to Maitlis before the official interview began.
The series delves into the controversial interview where Andrew addressed his association with Jeffrey Epstein, denied any encounters with Virginia Giuffre, and offered strange explanations involving sweat, the Falklands conflict, and Pizza Express. Maitlis, who conducted the actual interview, also served as an executive producer for the series.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding certain details, it has been reiterated that A Very Royal Scandal was crafted based on multiple accounts from individuals involved in the real-life events.
Prince Andrew recently announced his decision to relinquish his royal titles and honors amidst mounting scrutiny over his ties to Epstein and on the eve of the release of Ms. Giuffre’s book, where she accuses him of sexual misconduct.
While vehemently denying the allegations, Andrew faces further scrutiny after reports surfaced that he attempted to use the Met Police to discredit Ms. Giuffre by providing them with her confidential information.
During an interview with Victoria Derbyshire on the BBC, Maitlis expressed her desire for justice if anyone had contributed to making Ms. Giuffre’s life more difficult. Reflecting on Andrew’s emails to Epstein, Maitlis questioned the nature of their relationship and emphasized the need to reassess the interview in light of recent events.
She also commented on Andrew’s decision to renounce his title, stating that it was a long time coming given the aftermath of the interview and subsequent actions taken by the palace. The ongoing saga has raised questions about Andrew’s future involvement in royal events and the impact of his past actions on his reputation.
