An NHS manager, Jacqueline Robertson, was caught stealing over £8,000 from doctors at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, Scotland. The doctors had paid this money for overnight stays at the hospital over an 11-month period. Robertson, a cleaning manager, admitted to embezzling the funds while struggling with a severe gambling addiction that led her to spend up to £100 daily on gambling activities.
During her court appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, it was revealed that Robertson, aged 59, had taken the money from doctors who were staying overnight at the hospital. According to the prosecution, Robertson, who worked as a domestic supervisor at the hospital, was responsible for collecting payments from doctors for their stays and securely handling the funds.
The court heard that Robertson’s gambling habit spiraled out of control shortly before she began embezzling the funds. She had been using a gambling app on her phone and quickly found herself spending significant amounts of money daily. Despite her remorse, Robertson resorted to taking the cash meant for hospital stays to address her financial troubles.
Robertson’s defense lawyer, James McMacken, highlighted her lack of prior criminal record and detailed her descent into gambling addiction. He emphasized her deep regret for her actions and the financial difficulties that led her to commit the thefts. The court deferred sentencing to the following month, calling for further assessments before reaching a decision on the case.
