The Ministry of Justice is facing a crisis following the inadvertent release of two prisoners from the same jail within days of each other. Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a registered sex offender, was mistakenly set free from HMP Wandsworth last week, with the Metropolitan Police only being informed six days later. Additionally, fraudster William Smith, also known as Billy, was released on Monday due to a court records mix-up.
Both individuals are now subjects of police manhunts, adding to the recent release mishap involving another prisoner from HMP Chelmsford. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, acting in place of Keir Starmer at PMQs, expressed his shock and outrage at the situation, highlighting broader shortcomings in the criminal justice system.
Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian national, had been in the process of deportation when he went missing. He had been on the radar of the Home Office for overstaying his visa for more than five years. The police were only notified of his release a day after he disappeared, with reports indicating inappropriate behavior shortly after his court absence.
The released individual had a history of criminal activities, including a break-in and handling stolen goods, leading to his arrest and conviction in 2024. Despite being wanted for various offenses, a mix-up in the digital system led to his premature release.
Authorities are actively seeking both Kaddour-Cherif and Smith, emphasizing the importance of public assistance in locating them. The series of errors in the justice system has sparked criticism from officials, with calls for accountability and improved procedures to prevent such incidents in the future.
