Argos has introduced a popular alternative to Sky Q for homes seeking an upgrade without monthly fees. The Manhattan S4-R set-top box, launched recently, offers features similar to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record shows, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.

The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its cost-effective approach. Unlike Sky Q, which requires ongoing payments, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any additional fees once purchased. This device operates on Freesat, leveraging existing satellite infrastructure to deliver free TV channels directly to viewers, including popular networks like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.

The Manhattan S4-R boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search functions, and access to a vast library of on-demand content totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not match Sky Q in premium sports and movie offerings, Freesat’s advantage lies in its free-to-watch model.

Retailing at £219.99, the Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently available at stores like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions set to launch soon. Strong demand is evident, with Argos labeling the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted the S4-R as an ideal subscription-free option for households seeking affordability and flexibility in their TV services. Another disruptive device in the market is the Pleio puck, providing over 50 live channels via internet streaming without the need for an aerial.

After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is back on sale for £99.99, featuring a gaming controller and access to 200+ online games. Additionally, Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction on its Sky Glass Air TV before the upcoming World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month. Customers can opt for the advanced Sky Glass Gen 2 model, offering a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, starting at £11 per month.
