An individual passionate about football managed to raise more than £260,000 for a charitable cause by selling samosas. Additionally, a mother displayed remarkable courage by diving into the sea to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. Lastly, a five-year-old girl demonstrated exceptional bravery in overcoming the challenges of losing both her legs and rebuilding her life.
These outstanding individuals were among the winners celebrated at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast pool of public nominations, these everyday heroes were recognized at a prestigious ceremony in London, co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.
The event took an unexpected turn when P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the Pride of Britain Awards, generously provided each of the 12 winners with a cruise holiday. This opportunity allowed the recipients to embark on a memorable journey with their families.
We had the chance to speak with three heroes who enjoyed a 14-night Caribbean voyage aboard Britannia, visiting eight picturesque islands and indulging in top-notch entertainment.
Aiyla Mota, Young Child of Courage
Aiyla Mota fell critically ill just before her fourth birthday due to what initially seemed like a routine childhood infection. However, the illness escalated into sepsis, leading to multiple organ failure and necessitating the amputation of both her legs and five fingers to save her life.
Now at the age of five, Aiyla has shown remarkable resilience in her recovery. Her unwavering courage and positive attitude have inspired those around her, resulting in her receiving a Pride of Britain Award and becoming one of the youngest winners in the history of the awards.
Her mother, Eulanda, 28, from Middlesex, expressed, “Aiyla has always possessed a lively personality, and despite her challenges, she has retained that spark. If anything, she has become even more vivacious, confident, and spirited. She’s like a magnified version of herself!”
Following the award presentation by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family embarked on a Caribbean cruise, accompanied by her grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis. They relished exploring Britannia’s array of 27 restaurants and bars, eight live entertainment venues, and four swimming pools.
“The cruise was an unforgettable vacation, and I am deeply appreciative to P&O Cruises for this incredible opportunity,” expressed Eulanda. “It was our first cruise experience, and we were pleasantly surprised by the myriad activities available on board.
“One aspect that stood out was how, at times, you forgot you were on a ship due to the abundance of things to do.
“Aiyla particularly enjoyed the kids’ club, the entertainment, and staying up late! During our island visits, she loved the beaches and exploring the rainforest.
“For me, visiting Barbados held special significance. It was my family’s place of origin, but I had never been there before. Stepping onto the island, I felt immensely grateful to be there and to connect with my roots. It was a profound experience.”
