Baroness Helen Newlove, the Victims’ Commissioner, has sadly passed away following a brief illness. Widely recognized for her unwavering dedication to combating antisocial behavior, she utilized her platform to advocate for victims’ and witnesses’ rights after her husband fell victim to a fatal attack by hooligans in front of their family.

David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, expressed deep sorrow at the news, praising Baroness Newlove for her exceptional service and steadfast commitment to justice. Her husband, Garry, tragically lost his life in 2007 when a group of intoxicated youths brutally assaulted him in front of their daughters, following a prolonged period of harassment and violence they had endured in Padgate, Cheshire.

Baroness Newlove, in her role as Victims’ Commissioner, worked tirelessly to address issues of antisocial behavior and excessive drinking. Her efforts were recognized in 2010 when she was appointed Government Champion for Active, Safer Communities, collaborating with local communities to enhance safety measures and address local concerns. Additionally, in 2021, she assumed the position of Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, continuing her advocacy for victims’ rights.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron, who bestowed a peerage upon Baroness Newlove, reflected on her remarkable character and service to the community and Parliament. He highlighted her transformation from a victim of crime to a dedicated public servant, committed to ensuring victims received the support and justice they deserved.

The office of the Victims’ Commissioner released a statement mourning the loss of Baroness Newlove, emphasizing her profound impact on victim advocacy and the justice system. Described as a compassionate and dedicated advocate, she significantly elevated the role of Victims’ Commissioner, becoming a strong voice for victims and a champion for their rights. Her legacy as a respected colleague and friend will endure, and her contributions to victim welfare will be remembered with gratitude.
