One retired couple shared how they generate income and explore more of the UK through home-sitting. Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, began home-sitting in 2017 to stay active during retirement. Home-sitting entails caring for someone’s home while they are away, including looking after their pets.

Barbara, a retired administrative secretary, and Lawrence, a former police officer, now complete approximately one home sit per month, resulting in them being away from home for almost half of the year. Barbara expressed, “After retiring, we didn’t want to idle. Home-sitting was a perfect fit for us.”

Home-sitters receive a minimum of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets, with caring for two dogs and a cat amounting to £367.92 for the same duration. The responsibilities involve about one hour and 45 minutes of daily duties, along with a daily food allowance. Travel expenses are also covered, encompassing the initial meeting and transportation to and from assignments.

For the Blackwoods, who reside in Perthshire, Scotland, home-sitting has not only provided financial benefits but also assisted in saving on utility bills, particularly during cold winter months. Barbara estimates savings of around £47 per month during a winter assignment of approximately three to four weeks. From September to April, they save an average of £31 per month.

The couple’s travel expenses to and from assignments are reimbursed, often set aside for holidays, in addition to a daily food allowance and a modest payment for the assignments, depending on the tasks involved. While on assignment, they tend to spend less, focusing mainly on caring for the pets.

Barbara and Lawrence have explored numerous locations in Scotland through home-sitting, broadening their travel experiences. Lawrence mentioned, “We’ve had the opportunity to visit various places in Scotland and have cherished every moment. The flexibility and diversity make the experience unique.”

He continued, “It’s akin to a short break—a self-catering holiday. Although there are responsibilities, the rewards are fulfilling.” Barbara emphasized that their main concern is the well-being of the animals under their care, ensuring they feel secure and at ease in their routine.

With nearly a decade of home-sitting experience, the couple frequently undertake repeat assignments, with one family consistently welcoming them back since their inception in 2017. Barbara concluded, “We have no regrets. Home-sitting has given us a lifestyle we genuinely enjoy.”
