Millions of households are set to receive notifications this Wednesday regarding the upcoming reduction in their energy bills starting from April. Ofgem, the regulatory body, routinely updates its price cap every quarter, impacting the bills of a significant portion of customers on standard variable tariffs.
This adjustment incorporates a £150 discount recently announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Budget to alleviate the financial strain on consumers. The anticipated drop in costs, as projected by industry experts Cornwall Insight, is expected to amount to £117, bringing the annual total for a typical dual fuel household to £1,641. It is crucial to note that the price cap sets the maximum rate that energy providers can bill for energy units and standing charges, with the final bill contingent on individual energy consumption.
While the expected savings may not reach the widely advertised £150 yearly mark, a more precise estimation suggests an average household could save around £134. However, simultaneous increases in electricity standing charges might offset some of these gains. The majority, approximately 98%, of households are expected to witness reduced bills, with the extent of savings varying based on energy usage patterns.
Research from the Resolution Foundation indicates that approximately 7.5 million households may save less than £100, while 6.8 million could see savings surpassing £200, and 1.8 million enjoying more than £300 in reductions. The greatest benefits are anticipated for households with higher energy expenditures, such as those with electric heating systems or larger families with significant electricity demands, possibly due to medical requirements.
Notably, the revised pricing structure may disappoint low-energy users, as the emphasis is on reducing unit rates rather than standing charges, which affect all consumers regardless of energy consumption levels. Among the 34 million standard variable tariff customers, including six million with prepayment meters, around 21 million are on fixed tariffs and remain unaffected by Ofgem’s adjustments.
Following initial confusion regarding the implementation of the Budget’s savings, the government has clarified that customers on fixed tariffs can expect these benefits from April 2026. The reduction in bills is most pronounced in the first year but is expected to persist to a certain extent over the next three years. Despite ongoing policy changes and additional costs, organizations like the Resolution Foundation believe that annual bills will remain approximately £60 lower than current levels until 2029.
