A former police officer, Rebecca Sayegh, aged 32, admitted to breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s house in April and causing a disturbance. Responding to reports of a domestic incident at 11:20 pm on April 25, officers from the Berkeley Township Police Department found that Sayegh used her baton to break through the front door and confronted her ex-boyfriend and his new partner. Sayegh, who had previously lived with her ex for five years, engaged in a physical altercation with them, causing damage to the property and the victim’s car.
When the new girlfriend sought refuge in the backyard and called the police, Sayegh resisted arrest and attempted to fight with the responding officers. Despite her disruptive behavior, the officers managed to restrain her and prevent further damage to the property. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Sayegh, an off-duty Toms River Township Police Officer, had vandalized the residence and the victim’s vehicle.
Following a guilty plea at the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Sayegh relinquished her position at the Toms River Township Police Department and any future public employment in New Jersey. She is set to be sentenced on January 26 next year. Sayegh’s guilty plea came after she filed a lawsuit against the department and township, alleging sexual harassment and gender discrimination by her superiors.
