The victim, Morimasa Hibino, a Japanese national, fell approximately 22 feet to his death while sitting on the edge of the Pantheon’s perimeter wall in Rome at around 9:50pm local time. His fall was witnessed by a passing priest who alerted the authorities. Despite swift response from emergency services and firefighters, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal fall, with initial reports suggesting that the man lost his balance while seated on the wall. The injured tourist had climbed one of the railings between the Colosseum’s arches, slipped, and impaled his spine on a sharp metal spike, causing him to hang from the fence until he lost consciousness. Speculation suggests that he was trying to capture a daring selfie for a better view of the landmark. He was promptly taken to San Giovanni Hospital for emergency surgery and was later reported to be in serious but stable condition.
