Wolverhampton Wanderers have terminated the contract of manager Vitor Pereira as the team remains at the bottom of the Premier League standings. This decision follows Pereira’s recent extension of a three-year contract.
The team’s downfall was solidified by a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Fulham last Saturday, leaving Wolves without a victory in their first 10 games of the season. Despite making significant changes to the starting lineup, including nine alterations from the Carabao Cup match against Chelsea, Pereira’s tactics failed to secure a win at Craven Cottage.
The challenge worsened for Wolves when Emmanuel Agbadou received a red card in the 36th minute, leaving the team with 10 men for more than half the game while already trailing 1-0. Subsequent goals from Harry Wilson and an own goal by Yerson Mosquera sealed the defeat and marked the end of Pereira’s 11-month tenure.
Expressing gratitude for Pereira’s previous efforts in guiding the team through a tough period last season, Wolves’ executive chairman, Jeff Shi, acknowledged the disappointment of the current season’s start. Despite the desire to allow the head coach time to turn things around, the club felt compelled to make a change at this crucial point.
Appointed in December 2024 following Gary O’Neil’s departure, Pereira helped Wolves avoid relegation in the previous season. However, the departure of key player Matheus Cunha, who was triggered by Manchester United’s activation of his £62.5 million release clause, significantly impacted the team’s performance this season.
Wolves’ sole victories this season came in the Carabao Cup, both achieved at home. The recent defeat to Fulham now places the team eight points adrift from safety, highlighting the struggles they have faced under Pereira’s management.
Looking ahead, Wolves will face Chelsea in their next Premier League match. In the interim, under-21 head coach James Collins and under-18 boss Richard Walker will oversee training sessions while the club searches for Pereira’s replacement.
