London Marathon organizers are discussing the possibility of extending the event to span two days in 2027 in order to accommodate a larger number of participants. The iconic marathon, a staple in London since 1981, has continuously attracted runners over the years.

Traditionally held in a single day, the marathon may transition to a weekend-long event due to the increasing interest from runners. Plans are underway to expand the marathon’s duration to offer more opportunities for individuals to join in the prestigious race.

Expressing the ambition to involve more people in the renowned event, a spokesperson for the London Marathon stated that discussions are ongoing with partners and stakeholders to potentially host the 2027 TCS London Marathon over a two-day period. However, no official approval has been granted yet, with the primary focus remaining on delivering an exceptional 2026 marathon experience on April 26.

Hugh Brasher, the chief executive, emphasized the marathon’s global appeal and the continuous effort to explore innovative ways to engage a broader audience and benefit London positively. Collaboration with partners and stakeholders plays a vital role in organizing the event annually, with anticipation building for this year’s marathon.

The Mayor of London’s office also expressed interest in collaborating with London Marathon partners to explore the feasibility of extending the event to two days in the upcoming year.

With a record-breaking 1,133,813 applicants through the public ballot for this year’s marathon, representing a significant increase from the previous year, the event has set new benchmarks. The tremendous success is further highlighted by the highest-ever intake of £87.3 million, with last year’s marathon claiming a Guinness World Record for the most finishers in a single marathon.
