A petition signed by tens of thousands of Canadians is urging for the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra from Ottawa. The online petition, scheduled for submission in the House of Commons later this year, demands that Hoekstra be declared persona non grata and removed from his position as the U.S. ambassador to Canada.
As of Wednesday morning, nearly 60,000 individuals have endorsed the petition, a significant increase from just 24 hours ago. The petition alleges that Hoekstra’s statements have jeopardized the diplomatic ties between Canada and the U.S. and accuses him of interfering in Canadian political discussions in a manner inconsistent with diplomatic norms.
Additionally, the petition calls for the Canadian government to instruct a parliamentary committee to scrutinize U.S. diplomatic involvement in Canadian affairs.
