Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and proud father residing in Toronto, stumbled upon the idea of entering an international whistling contest while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect.” Intrigued by the concept, Shannon and his daughter, Sumire, signed up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list as a lighthearted activity. Initially viewing it as a casual pastime, Shannon’s ironic perspective shifted as they received confirmation of their audition success.
To their surprise, the competition was to take place in Los Angeles, transforming their whimsical endeavor into a serious pursuit. Seeking guidance from the renowned organizer, Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as the Whistling Diva, Shannon and Sumire embarked on a rigorous training regimen to hone their skills for the prestigious event.
Months of dedicated practice culminated in their participation at the 2023 Masters of Musical Whistling competition in Hollywood. Surrounded by exceptionally talented contestants from across the globe, Shannon and Sumire showcased their abilities on stage, with Sumire clinching the silver in the kids’ category and Shannon securing the gold in the level one adults’ division.
The experience not only brought them accolades but also led Shannon to reflect on his past penchant for irony and detachment. As he witnessed the genuine passion and talent of his fellow competitors, including his daughter, Shannon embraced the sincerity and joy of their shared accomplishment. Winning the competition held a deeper significance for Shannon, bridging his ironic past with a newfound appreciation for genuine pursuits and personal growth.
