Two ex-NBA athletes have plunged into the center of contentious debates surrounding transgender athletes this week by announcing their intentions to join the 2027 WNBA draft. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White’s declarations were met with widespread criticism, described by a sports columnist as not only political gimmicks ridiculing the league and its female players but also as malicious efforts to belittle a marginalized community.
The WNBA has been embroiled in controversy following Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s recent remarks about transgender individuals in sports. Kanter Freedom and White have indicated that their plans depend on the league’s regulations, which stipulate that only women can participate but do not explicitly exclude transgender women.
Kanter Freedom, who retired from the NBA in 2022 after an 11-season career, asserted on Instagram that he fulfills all WNBA requirements by simply declaring his identity. On the other hand, White, who played three NBA games averaging zero points, stated on Fox News that he occasionally identifies as a woman for basketball purposes.
