Statistics Canada has reported a significant influx of drivers crossing the Gordie Howe International Bridge into Canada in the days following its recent opening. The much-anticipated bridge, which links Windsor and Detroit, finally opened to traffic on July 27th, albeit after a series of delays.
According to preliminary data from StatCan, there were approximately 18,900 return trips made by Canadian residents crossing into Canada from the United States via the Gordie Howe bridge in the initial five days of its operation. Similarly, during the same timeframe, 18,100 U.S. residents entered Canada by crossing the bridge.
In contrast, other border crossings in the area, such as the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, reported a total of 52,700 inbound trips made by both Canadians and U.S. residents during the same period.
Furthermore, in the last five days of July, 4,100 commercial transport trucks were recorded crossing into Canada via the Gordie Howe bridge.
This surge in traffic highlights the immediate impact of the bridge’s opening on cross-border travel in the region.
