Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation family farmer and president of the Iowa Farmers Union, expressed his views on the trade war, stating, “This policy has been very chaotic, and our farmers have struggled to understand the situation. We’ve lost many international customers due to the unpredictable trade policy.”
For farmers like Lehman, the economic strain could intensify if Trump follows through on his threat to impose 50 per cent tariffs on hundreds of Canadian goods on Aug. 19. Canada is a vital export market for Iowa, representing 30 per cent of the state’s total goods exports in 2025.
Despite ongoing negotiations between the two countries to secure a trade deal, the current standoff persists, with significant implications for the agricultural sector in Iowa and beyond.
Speaking to CBC News, Lehman expressed his struggles in planning for the future of his farm amidst the economic uncertainty caused by trade tensions, stating, “It’s a challenging time for our farm.”
