The mother of two boys in Saint John, who were tragically killed by their father last year, expressed that no legal punishment can ever replace her sons, whom she described as her greatest source of happiness. Following the sentencing of Roman Kamyshnyy to life in prison without parole for 25 years by the New Brunswick Court of King’s Bench, the ex-wife of the perpetrator conveyed her enduring grief in a statement.

Kamyshnyy, aged 46, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons, resulting in an automatic life sentence as per the Criminal Code. Despite the severity of the charges, the law mandates that the sentences run concurrently. Justice Darrell Stephenson, acknowledging the legal constraints, emphasized the profound impact of Kamyshnyy’s actions on his ex-wife and her family.

The judge characterized Kamyshnyy’s motive as one of vengeance, highlighting the appalling nature of his deeds during the trial. The court heard how Kamyshnyy meticulously planned and executed the murders to inflict maximum pain on his ex-wife, following their recent divorce. The chilling details of the crime, including the violent struggle witnessed by neighbors, were presented during the trial.

Crown prosecutor Elaina Campbell described the betrayal suffered by the victims, emphasizing the significant repercussions on the community and the emotional toll on those affected. The sentencing included strict conditions for Kamyshnyy, such as no contact with specific individuals, a ban on firearms, and a victim fine surcharge.

Witnesses provided impactful victim impact statements, detailing the profound loss and trauma experienced by the family and community. Despite the harrowing ordeal, the mother of the two boys expressed gratitude for the support received and vowed to honor her sons’ memory as she strives to rebuild her life.

The courtroom proceedings underscored the devastating consequences of the heinous act, leaving a lasting scar on the community and the lives of those touched by the tragedy. The sentencing marked a somber conclusion to a chapter of profound loss and sorrow, as the victims’ loved ones continue to grapple with the aftermath of the senseless violence.
