Parts of British Columbia are experiencing severe drought conditions this summer, leading to water-use restrictions in Bessette Creek to protect salmon populations. Temporary protection orders were also issued for the Salmon River watershed due to increased wildfire risk. Bob Crandall, treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, mentioned that the streams connected to Lake Cowichan are getting drier each year. The society conducts fry salvage to rescue fish from drying rivers and relocate them to other waterways.
Crandall emphasized the importance of human intervention in improving ecosystem challenges caused by human activities. While communities in British Columbia are supportive of these efforts, scientists caution that this may not be a sustainable long-term solution. Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall relocates fish, including salmon, trout, and char, to areas with more water. However, the changing climate is making the task more challenging, with streams drying up farther upstream than before.
The process involves using aerators and nets for transportation, which can be strenuous in hot weather. Crandall, who has a lifelong connection with fish, believes in preserving them as an integral part of the ecosystem. The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a significant role in fry salvage efforts, utilizing drones to monitor drying streams and supporting relocation activities.
Challenges in fish rescue are not unique to British Columbia, as France also faces difficulties due to severe drought and extreme heat. Jean-Pierre Faure highlighted the inadequacy of fish relocation efforts in France, where unprecedented weather events have strained management programs. Fish in low river flows experience intensified competition for resources, leading to more deaths. Faure stressed the need for ecosystem restoration and water management over short-term interventions like relocation, as moving fish can cause stress, injuries, and disease spread. Additionally, the costs and logistical challenges of large-scale relocation become impractical when vast river systems dry up.
