The Professional Women’s Hockey League reported that the Montreal Victoire’s championship trophy, the Walter Cup, is currently missing. The league issued a statement confirming that the trophy did not arrive at its intended destination as scheduled and is collaborating with the shipping company to locate it.
The trophy was supposed to be delivered to Lethbridge, Alberta, for a celebration with Victoire forward Dara Greig. However, upon arrival, the container was found without the Walter Cup inside, causing the postponement of Greig’s trophy day, including a planned public event at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated person to accompany the trophy when it travels to be with players. The missing Walter Cup is a replica given to championship-winning teams for their possession, distinct from the one presented on the ice after winning, which remains at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Both versions of the Walter Cup, including the missing one, are crafted from sterling silver and designed by Tiffany & Co., weighing around 35 pounds and standing approximately 24 inches in height and 13 inches wide. The cup features hockey stick-like rods on which six W’s representing the league’s original franchises are engraved, with championship teams listed on the puck-shaped base.
Montreal secured the Walter Cup by defeating Ottawa in a decisive Game 4 in May, becoming the first Canadian team to claim the PWHL title. The trophy is named after PWHL founder and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, along with his wife Kimbra.
