The legendary Mighty Sparrow, a key figure in popularizing calypso music globally since the 1950s, has passed away at the age of 91. Known as Slinger Francisco at birth, he peacefully departed while surrounded by his family in New York after a brief illness, as confirmed by his family.

Originating from the coastal town of Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935, Francisco relocated to Trinidad and Tobago with his parents at a young age in 1937. Trinidad and Tobago holds a significant position in calypso music history, providing the platform for the emergence of the iconic Mighty Sparrow, who delivered numerous hit songs in the genre such as “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”

Kamla Persad Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, praised Sparrow’s musical legacy, emphasizing how his music transcended borders and carried the essence of their culture worldwide. Over his illustrious career spanning six decades, Francisco produced an extensive catalog of songs and performed at prestigious venues like New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Acknowledged with national accolades by Trinidad and Tobago and bestowed with an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of the West Indies in 1987, the Mighty Sparrow’s impact on the Caribbean music scene was immense. Leaders from various countries, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica, paid tribute to his influence and contribution to the region’s cultural landscape.

While celebrated for his lively carnival tunes, the Mighty Sparrow also delved into topical and political themes in his music, addressing issues like Trinidad and Tobago’s independence, global political figures, and local festivals such as Toronto’s Caribana. His music not only entertained but also served as a reflection of societal events and cultural celebrations.

Renowned for advancing the art of calypso, the Mighty Sparrow’s legacy as a cultural revolutionary and supreme entertainer remains embedded in the hearts of music enthusiasts worldwide.
