Skydance-owned Paramount has successfully finalized its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery in the United States, in a deal worth $81 billion. The merger, completed on Tuesday, has birthed a new entertainment powerhouse now known simply as “Skydance.” This landmark consolidation unites two of America’s oldest film studios and brings under one roof iconic titles like “Harry Potter,” “Sinners,” and renowned networks such as CNN, along with platforms like Paramount+, CBS, “Top Gun,” and “The Godfather.”

The combined entity will be steered by billionaire David Ellison and new co-CEO Ynon Kreiz, formerly of Mattel, consolidating influence in an industry dominated by a select few major players. Additionally, Ellison has hinted at plans to eventually merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming service. However, in the Canadian market, existing multi-year distribution deals with Bell Media, Rogers, and Corus for HBO, Discovery, and Paramount content respectively, are expected to maintain the status quo in the streaming landscape for the foreseeable future.

While potential consolidation of streaming services looms in the U.S., industry experts suggest that such a move may not be financially viable in Canada due to the market size. As streaming service accessibility remains stable, consumers should anticipate price increases as part of a broader industry trend towards profitability and debt management.

In response to settlement terms with dissenting U.S. states, Paramount has committed to releasing a minimum of 30 films annually over the next two years, with a distribution focus on theaters. Subsequent years will see the release of 32 films per year, with half of them being produced or co-produced by the merged company. This shift raises concerns among independent cinema advocates about potential limitations on diverse film offerings in the future.

The increased film production investment in the U.S. by Paramount could result in limited opportunities for Canadian industry professionals. Reports suggest that cost-saving measures, including job cuts, are on the horizon as Skydance aims to streamline operations post-merger. Hollywood luminaries have expressed both support and opposition to the merger, highlighting concerns over job loss, reduced diversity in film offerings, and consolidation of creative voices.

The acquisition has also drawn attention to the fate of CNN under Skydance ownership, amidst criticisms and expectations of editorial independence. While assurances have been made regarding CNN’s autonomy, skepticism persists given past instances of managerial upheavals. The involvement of the Ellison family, with ties to former U.S. President Trump, has raised eyebrows, reinforcing the need for vigilance regarding the future direction of the merged media conglomerate.
