German authorities are probing a drone carrying explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hints at Moscow’s plans to increase retaliatory actions against nations aiding Ukraine.

In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe measures to dismantle anything supporting the West in aiding Kyiv’s military efforts.” He added, “We are already taking such steps.”

The drone, equipped with an unidentified explosive device, was found by an airport staff member in the security area of Leipzig airport’s cargo operations zone near the south runway. This airport is considered a critical infrastructure facility and serves as a key NATO hub for transporting arms, ammunition, weapons, and military gear to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.

The presence of the drone next to one of the Ukrainian cargo planes is seen as a heightened risk for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. Dobrindt emphasized that the incident appears to be part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario and not the work of amateurs.

While German authorities continue their investigation without disclosing the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence officials have suggested that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Amid the escalating tensions, Berlin is enhancing its anti-drone capabilities cautiously and refraining from premature accusations. Dobrindt emphasized the importance of gathering facts before making official statements.

The German interior minister highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Germany, citing Russia’s use of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations, particularly in the lead-up to regional elections in Germany.

Dobrindt warned of continuous hybrid warfare threats targeting Germany, including espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert actions aimed at destabilizing the nation and instigating political and social changes.

Recent incidents, such as the discovery of a Russian plot to assassinate a German defense contractor’s CEO and the arrest of a suspected Russian spy gathering intelligence on Berlin’s military support for Ukraine, underscore the persistent threats faced by Germany.

Experts, including Hans-Jakob Schindler, senior director of the Counter Extremism Project, view the Leipzig drone incident as a bold escalation of Russia’s interference tactics. Schindler raised concerns about the blurred line between defense and direct conflict in light of such aggressive actions.

Schindler also pointed out Lavrov’s statements as a departure from Russia’s previous denials of interference in Western nations, indicating a more aggressive stance against Europe, the West, and NATO.

The situation underscores the evolving nature of hybrid warfare and prompts urgent considerations about defining boundaries between hostile actions and conventional warfare strategies.
