Provincial authorities have reported the discovery of a third set of human remains at a property near Smiths Falls in eastern Ontario. The latest remains have been confirmed to belong to Lawrence Bertrim, who was last seen in downtown Smiths Falls in September 2022. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating the cause of his death, and no charges have been filed. A $50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in Bertrim’s case remains available, according to the police.
Lawrence Bertrim was 42 years old at the time he went missing. Detective Inspector Jennifer Patton of the OPP expressed that finding Bertrim’s remains is a significant development for his family, who have been searching for answers for almost four years, as well as for the investigative team dedicated to this case.
While the investigation continues, police disclosed that Bertrim’s remains were located on the Kelly Jordan Road property on August 6, the day following the discovery of another missing man, Robert Lambert, on the same property in July. Although no charges have been brought forth in Lambert’s death, authorities had previously suspected foul play.
In a separate incident, the remains of Robbie Thomson were found on the same property in October 2025. Four individuals have been charged in connection with Thomson’s death, including three suspects facing first-degree murder charges.
Bertrim and Thomson were acquainted with each other, as reported by CBC News in 2023. They were also believed to have known Steven Tate, whose body was found in a ditch along Highway 15 in November 2023. The deaths of Tate and the disappearances of Bertrim and Thomson had a profound impact on the Smiths Falls community. The discovery of the human remains deeply affected the local residents and the surrounding rural area, according to statements by the local reeve.
