Researchers have uncovered the mystery behind the unique straight growth of narwhal tusks, which can reach lengths of up to three meters. The tusk, an upper tooth that protrudes through the whale’s lip on the left side, stands out as the only mammal tusk that grows perfectly straight, devoid of any curves.
The breakthrough discovery, detailed in a recent publication in Nature Communications, reveals that the secret lies in the tusk’s distinct pattern of opposing spirals. The study, led by Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, sheds light on how these opposing spirals, one turning right and the other left, contribute to the straight growth of the tusk.
The investigation commenced when Birkedal collaborated with colleagues studying molecular structures to explore why certain molecules exhibit right-handed or left-handed configurations. Intrigued by reports that narwhal tusks feature spirals all rotating in the same direction (to the left), the team embarked on a comprehensive analysis.
Utilizing advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans, the researchers uncovered that the tusks, primarily present in male narwhals, consist of dentine and cementum, resembling human teeth but lacking enamel. Within the tusk structure, they identified two opposing spirals: a left-handed spiral on the external layer of cementum and a right-handed spiral within the inner dentine layer.
This significant finding not only unravels the enigma behind the narwhal’s straight tusk but also holds promise for enhancing our understanding of the structural principles governing human bones and similar biological phenomena, according to Birkedal.
Distinguished narwhal biologist Martin Nweeia, from Harvard University, lauded the research for delving into what he describes as the “most extraordinary tooth on the planet.” Contrary to the study’s initial characterization of the tusk’s function as speculative, Nweeia’s independent research has highlighted the primary sensory role of the tusk, rather than its use for defense or feeding purposes.
Looking ahead, Nweeia advocates for future research collaborations with Indigenous communities and off-season studies to further explore the mysteries surrounding narwhals. He emphasizes the importance of integrating scientific findings with traditional knowledge to gain a comprehensive understanding of these elusive marine mammals.
The interdisciplinary nature of this research underscores the value of collaborative efforts, with Birkedal emphasizing the significance of diverse disciplines coming together to unlock new insights that would be unattainable in isolation.
